12-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Hit By Cab

A 12-year-old girl was killed when he was struck by a cab in front of her school, authorities said.

Capture

The victim was attempting to cross Cooper City Street when the vehicle plowed into her near the corner of 150th Street and dragged her body for one block, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.

“The car collided with the child and dragged her halfway down the street from 150th to 149th Street,” said a 49-year-old crossing guard who added that the girl did not have the light when she dashed into the street.

The crossing guard said, she was on the opposite side of the street when the children began crossing with the light, but added she ordered them to halt at the median separating the north and southbound lanes when it was clear the signal was about to change.

The victim, a sixth-grader at a Broward County Academy, may have been chasing a friend who darted across the southbound lanes when she was struck, police sources said.

“When the girl was crossing, the red hand was flashing,” the crossing guard said, adding that she could not remember what number the countdown clock was at when she crossed.

“I only wave them across if they have plenty of time to walk across safely,” she said.

The victim was rushed to Broward Hospital where she was pronounced dead, officials said.

The driver of the cab remained on the scene, according to police. It was not immediately clear if he would be charged with a crime.
