The driver of a minivan that fatally struck a 13-year-old girl and seriously injured her pregnant mom swiped the vehicle from a valet parking garage where he works, police said.
A 32-year-old man who works at a catering hall on 54th Street and 15th Avenue, allegedly stole the Honda Odyssey from the Royal Parking Garage to run an errand when he struck the victims at 18th Avenue and 60th Street in Roseland, police and the Florida Highway Patrol Department said.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the vehicle belonged to a man attending an event at the hall, police said, but the driver was not authorized to use it.
The driver, who remained at the scene after the accident, was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle without the owner’s consent and was slapped with a violation on an active warrant for a marijuana-based offense, cops said.
The young girl, identified as Veronica Palms, was rushed to Delray Medical Center, where she died.
After being struck, the 47-year-old mother was pinned beneath the minivan, witnesses said.
