Rescue personnel were dispatched to the outer loop bridge and found at least thirteen victims, a dispatcher said.

A Martin County Transportation Authority Police spokesman said, a 31-year-old man of Port Salerno entered the outer loop of I-95 near exit 1 driving in the wrong direction. He then crashed into a SUV.

A 4-year-old and three other victims in the SUV died. The 4-year-old’s mother, who was driving the SUV, and her 7-month-old sister were taken to a hospital. The woman is in serious condition and her 7-month-old is in stable condition.

Nine other people were severely injured in the crash and were also in critical conditions.

Police officers say the cause of the crash is unknown and an investigation continues. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.

All outer loop lanes of the highway were closed and would remain so “for a while,” according to a Florida Highway Patrol official.
