A 15-year-old died and five others were seriously injured in Florida’s latest violent incident involving juveniles and stolen cars.
The blue 2016 Mazda was stolen from a gated community in Palm Beach Gardens. It struck a Peugeot at a high rate of speed about 60 miles on northbound Interstate 95 near the exit ramp at State Road 84.
The driver, who Fort Lauderdale police have not identified, failed to make a proper turn at the ramp. The force of the crash detached much of the car’s front end. Derrick Jones 15, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three in Mazda, one reportedly as young as 9, were taken to Broward General Medical Center with serious injuries.
The owner of the car who lives in Riviera Beach declined comment. A man’s wallet, driver’s license, headphones and car seats were stolen as well, according to Palm Beach Gardens police records.
The two people is the Peugeot sustain life threatening injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital
Martin’s death comes amid a wave of crimes and crashes involving teenagers, many of whom are too young to have a driver’s license.
