A fiery crash closed all lanes southbound of Florida’s Turnpike. Okeechobee County Fire Rescue personnel and the Florida Highway Patrol Department responded to the traffic crash at mile marker 187 of the turnpike near the Fort Drum Service Center.
The occupants in both vehicles were able to exit their vehicles before they caught fire. When firefighters arrived on the scene, both were fully engulfed with flames.
A sedan and a cargo truck hauling produce were involved in the car crash, according to firefighters and the Florida Highway Patrol Department. Debris was scattered all over the roadway.
The fire caused damage to the lanes that had to be repaired before the right lane could reopen. Two people were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.
All lanes are now open.
The crash is south beyond SR 66 near the Fort Drum Service Plaza. Firefighters and the Florida Highway Patrol Department is encouraging anyone with relevant information concerning the cause of the car crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol Department.
