A Palm Beach County bound bus crashed into a wrecked car and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 outside Boynton Beach, injuring more than 11 people, FHP authorities said.
A bus with 16 passengers on board was traveling south on I-95 when it slammed into a car that had just crashed into a guardrail and come to rest in the highway’s left lane just south of Boynton Beach, the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies said, the bus then hit the rear of a tractor-trailer whose driver had pulled over on the highway’s shoulder to offer assistance to the car’s driver.
Eleven of the passengers and the bus driver were injured, an official said. Emergency crews extricated the driver from the vehicle’s smashed-in front end, deputies said. He was listed in serious condition at a hospital in Delray Beach.
The injured passengers mostly suffered lower extremity, chest, back and facial injuries, all of them apparently minor, police said. They were transported to hospitals in the 8 ambulances and other emergency vehicles that responded to the crash scene.
The driver of the car was charged with driving while intoxicated. Deputies said his name would be released later. I-95’s southbound lanes were closed.
Deputies said, the bus left Palm Beach and was on its way to Indian River County and was scheduled to arrive in Broward County. The uninjured passengers were taken to Delray Beach bus station.
