Nine Injured After Car Crash That Shut Down Traffic In St. Lucie County
A chain-reaction pileup on the St. Lucie County Expressway involving two 18-wheelers, a pickup truck and a Toyota Corolla left nine people injured, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.
The crash happened on the northbound side of N 25th Street, according to Florida Highway Patrol officials.
One of the rigs had been stopped in the middle lane with a Ford pickup idling behind him, when the second tractor-trailer came barreling into the rear of the much Ford truck.
“A second 18-wheeler, traveling in the same direction, failed to negotiate this stop and caused a chain-reaction collision, hitting both the Ford pickup truck and also a Toyota Corolla,” an official said at a press conference. “The Toyota Corolla ended up being lodged on top of the center divider of the highway,” he added. “The Ford pickup truck was wedged underneath the second tractor-trailer.”
Two of the injured were not yet identified. The others were in serious condition and had been taken to a hospital in St. Lucie County
The cause of the crash still remains under investigation and FHP is urging anyone with essential information concerning the crash to contact the department.
