A Wellington police sergeant was struck by a car while assisting in an earlier crash on Interstate 95, Florida Highway Patrol reports.
A Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant tells the Post that Calvin Frank had stopped south of Royal Palm Boulevard in Broward County. As he walked along the paved shoulder of the southbound lane, he was struck by a passing car.
The Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant says the driver had swerved to avoid his patrol car and ended up on the shoulder where the officer was walking. The driver was cited for careless driving.
The earlier crash was a rollover crash. The driver of that vehicle was charged with driving under the influence.
The Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant says the crash stresses the importance of following the state’s Move Over Law.
The 31-year-old driver of the car which had struck the Wellington police sergeant was still at the crash scene and cooperating with Broward County Police officials and the Florida Highway Patrol.
It is still unclear what had triggered the incident, but it is believe the 31-year-old driver wasn’t the influence of either alcohol or drugs.
Florida Highway Patrol is urging any eye witness with additional information on the crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
