An off duty Indian River County cop was injured in a motorcycle accident in Indian River County, Florida Highway Patrol sources said.
The police officer collided with a Chrysler Concorde as he was traveling down Vero Beach in Indian River County, police sources and Florida Highway Patrol officials said.
The driver of the SUV was apparently trying to make a turn onto 158th Street when the officer plowed into the car, sending his body flying into the air.
“He was face down and wasn’t moving. He was breathing but he wasn’t moving,” said a 21-year-old witness “He was laying about 10 feet away from his bike.”
He was taken to a hospital in Indian River County in critical condition, according to FHP officials.
The driver of the SUV remained on scene. It was not unclear if he would be charged with a crime, as the Florida Highway Patrol officials are still investigating the car crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol is withholding the officer’s name pending family notification, and urging anyone with relevant information concerning the crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol Department.
