A passenger died, a 24-year-old was injured and an unlicensed driver was taken to the hospital where a blood sample was taken to see if he was under the influence, Davie police said.
The crash happened before dawn on the 3200 block of State Road 84, in the eastbound lanes approaching Marina Mile, west of Interstate 95.
The car crashed into a guardrail before overturning and landing on a grassy median.
Both young men were thrown from a car that crashed along State Road 84 in Davie.
Rescuers had to free one of the men who was wedged under a fence, police said. Frank Matthew of Fort Lauderdale, died at the scene, said a spokesman for the Davie Police Department.
The 24-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with “serious injuries and signs of impairment,” the spokesman said. Investigators obtained a search warrant so that they could take blood samples, he said.
Court records showed that the 24-year-old was arrested some months ago for driving a motorcycle without a valid license. This was the latest in a string of traffic infractions that include convictions for reckless driving, speeding and driving with a suspended license.
The driver of Fort Lauderdale is expected to be in a Broward County courtroom for arraignment on two misdemeanor charges related to the motorcycling incident, court filings show.
