The mother of an 8-year-old boy was critically injured when her vehicle was hit head-on by a man that was drinking and driving the wrong way down a busy interstate highway, reports say.
The 29-year-old mom was airlifted to a local hospital by paramedics at the scene of the crash, according to the post. She was the mother of an 8-year-old son.
Police identified a 46-year-old as the driver of the wrong-way vehicle. He is charged with driving while intoxicated, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.
Authorities say the 46-year-old was driving a Nissan Armada eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Palm Beach County.
The 46-year-old driver first sideswiped a vehicle, which caused it to spin and get hit by another vehicle. He then hit the woman’s vehicle head-on, which sent it into the path of a semi-trailer. The semi jack-knifed and hit the highway’s cement median.
The 46-year-old vehicle burst into flames after the crash. He survived and is in a hospital’s intensive care unit. It is a miracle the woman and her son also survived the crash, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.
Florida Highway Patrol is still investing the accident.
