A fatal crash involving a van that had a tire malfunction shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 95 during the evening rush hour in northern Palm Beach County.
The crash involving one vehicle, a 2005 Chevy, occurred at Exit 79C, Military Trail, in Palm Beach Gardens. Injured was Steve Grant, 37, of Delray Beach, who was a passenger in the car driven by a 25-year old, also of Delray Beach.
The vehicle was traveling on I-95 in the left center lane, just north of Military Trail, when there was a tire malfunction, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The 25-year old lost control of the vehicle, which rolled over several times. It came to a rest between the left HOV lane and the left center lane, facing in the west direction, FHP said.
Grant was airlifted to a hospital by paramedics at the scene and the 25-year old had minor injuries, according to FHP.
The driver was wearing a seat belt but it wasn’t known if Grant has his on. Initially, all five lanes were shut down, but within an hour one lane was reopened. Only one lane was blocked but traffic was backed up to Donald Ross Road, where motorists were exiting. Shortly later all lanes were open.
