Community pays tribute to three beautiful girls, police continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident which took their lives.
A Martin County Senior Sergeant with the Florida Highway Patrol said this tragic case highlighted the consequences of inexperienced drivers getting behind the wheel.
“This highlights the need to make sure they are suitably supervised. At the end of the day, there’s a reason you have to be 16 to get a learner’s permit, and learners have stringent conditions.”
The accident occurred on Hobe Sound Road, a dirt road 7 miles from Port Salerno as the girls were returning from school.
While an 18-year old girl, was pronounced dead at the scene, two of her younger sisters were transported to Martin County Hospital before they also died.
A third passenger, a 15-year-old girl, sustained extensive but non-life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital.
A police inspector said all four girls were thrown from the Nissan 4WD, and it appeared they were not wearing seatbelts.
After a horror day with three fatalities, Port Salerno annual road toll rose to 19.
