A woman, aged 36, of Riviera Beach, remained at a local hospital in Palm Beach County just days after the accident, according to a Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant.
The woman, driving a Kia, was struck by a 1998 Honda Civic driven by a 36-year old woman, of Martin County, who was traveling south on I-95 at the time, according to a news release from the FHP.
Officials said downpours in the area prevented the 36-year-old from seeing the Kia initially.
“She did not see it until the last second,” an FHP official said.
FHP officials said the 36-year-old had swerved to avoid the car, but instead sideswiped it and hit the woman in the process. The car impact was strong enough to spin the vehicle counter-clockwise before stopping.
The Kia driver suffered a severed leg inury. The FHP and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office provided tourniquets to help stabilize the leg, according to the release.
The 36-year-old remained on the scene. FHP said charges in the crash are still pending.
Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to distracted driving. “In my many years as a Personal Injury Lawyer I’ve helped many victims that were injured because someone was distracted and crashed into their vehicles.
