The crash happened in the northbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway (State Road 826) near Northwest 58th Street.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of a black Volkswagen was heading north and lost control of the vehicle, careening off the road and into trees. Two passengers who were thrown from the car died. A third person died in the car and two people were seriously injured.
The agency identified those who died as Diego Ortiz, 21, Shelley Rapp, 20 and Daniela Hernandez, 21, all of whom lived in Weston.
The two people who survived were taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
Because of the crash, the northbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway were closed through the crash scene for several hours.
Anyone with relevant information concerning what may have caused the car crash is asked to contact the FHP Department or any other relevant investigating authority.
Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to distracted driving. “In my many years as a Personal Injury Lawyer I’ve helped many victims that were injured because someone was distracted and crashed into their vehicles. If you’ve been injured by someone because they weren’t paying attention to the road, please call me so I can help you get compensation for your damages.”
