Video shot from a helicopter shows a man leading Florida Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase, crashing into a pickup truck, and then taking off on foot while holding a 1-year-old in a carrier. The Palm Beach County Department of Public Safety released the video.
The incident happened on Summit Blvd. in Palm Beach County. Authorities say the man was traveling about 100mph before a Florida Highway Patrol officer deployed a tire deflation device that caused him to rear-end the pickup that had stopped at a light. He jumped out of his SUV, grabbed the child carrier, and ran. He then climbed into another vehicle containing a man and a child.
The pickup truck driver and a passenger were both unconscious when police arrived at the scene and were taken to a local hospital. Police say the suspect, identified as a 32-year-old man, attempted a carjacking before the male driver leaped out of the car and grabbed a child from the back seat.
FHP officers blocked the vehicle and got everyone out, including the man, who was handcuffed. He was charged with child endangerment, evading arrest, and possession of a controlled substance. The baby was released to Child Protective Services.
Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash. “Driving the speed limit on Florida’s Highways isn’t just the law. It may save your life by keeping you from being in an accident. Unfortunately, in our practice, we have seen numerous instances where drivers blatantly violate these regulations, which results in catastrophic consequences.”
