A south-central Florida man has been identified as the pedestrian struck and killed in a crash that happened south of Greenacres. Jiromy Ricardo Vega-Gonzalez, 20, was from Avon Park, north of Sebring, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.
Officials had been trying since the crash to find the man’s identity, including posting an illustration, in order to notify relatives.
According to a PBSO log entry, a Honda Civic was northbound in the center lane on the 6100 block of South Jog Road near Lantana Road when the driver, a 26-year-old man, saw a pedestrian in front of him in his lane.
The 26-year old said he swerved but was unable to avoid the pedestrian who was killed. The man was dead when deputies arrived minutes later, the sheriff’s report said.
It said no charges were immediately filed but authorities are still investigating the crash. The report said the 26-year old wore a safety belt and alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
The report had no information about Vega-Gonzalez or why he might have been in Palm Beach County.
Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash. “A Hit-and-run is one of the worst type of accidents. When that person that fled the scene is caught you have rights that are different then in a regular car crash. Make sure you speak to a licensed professional about your rights”.
