A 23-year-old Palm Beach Gardens woman identified as Bailey Theel was killed and a 22-year-old Loxahatchee woman was injured when their car rear-ended an 18-wheeler on Interstate 95 in Martin County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Bailey Theel died and another suffered minor injuries in the crash which occurred near the Bridge Road exit near Hobe Sound.
According to the report, a woman was driving a 2012 Ford Mustang south in a middle lane on the expressway when, “for unknown reasons”, its right front struck the rear of a tractor-trailer that was in the outside lane.
Theel, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was killed, the report said. It said the driver was treated at Cleveland Clinic Martin South Hospital in Stuart.
The truck’s driver, Alfred Livingston, 47, from the Pembroke Pines area in Broward County, suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized.
The FHP report said it’s unknown if the two women wore safety belts. It said Livingston did. It also said the possibility of alcohol being involved is pending with the Mustang driver.
Reached by The Palm Beach Post, Theel’s father said he did not want to comment.
Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash. “Cases involving accidents with trucks are always subject to heightened scrutiny because of the additional regulations placed on drivers of those vehicles. Unfortunately, in our practice, we have seen numerous instances where drivers blatantly violate these regulations, which results in catastrophic consequences.”
