U.S. 1 Collision Leaves 2 Injured In Stuart

STUART — A two-vehicle wreck injured two people in the 1100 block of U.S. 1, closing off part of the road for several hours, fire and police officials said.

The two people injured were flown to a local hospital, said Martin County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Bethany Alex. They were not identified.

“They were Priority 2, which is moderate to critical injuries,” Alex said.

Stuart police spokesman Sgt. Brian Bossio said officers received reports of the collision at dusk.

He said a white Ford Explorer was heading north on U.S. 1 at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and drove over the median into the southbound lanes, crashing into a van.

The Explorer turned on its side, metal bits covered the ground and at least one tire came loose from one of the vehicles.

After the collision, officers closed off the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 between Southeast Colorado Avenue and Broadway Street for almost four hours.

No other people were reported injured and no other vehicles were damaged.
