Girl In Coma After Deadly Crash On Stuart Highway
A 14-year-old girl is fighting for her life and may never walk again following a Stuart car crash that killed her stepmom, her grandmother told reporters.
The girl is in a coma at Stuart Medical Center after undergoing surgery for bleeding in the brain and a broken spine.
The wreck left her stepmom dead and two others, her 12-year-old son and her 28-year-old brother injured. “She is critical,” her mom said outside Stuart Medical. “We don’t know if she’s going to be able to walk again.”
Her grandmother said the swelling in her granddaughter’s brain has gone down but that the teen still hasn’t woken up since the accident. “She is in a deep coma,” her grandmother said, before leaving the hospital to visit her other 12-year old grandson, who suffered a broken collarbone, at Jensen Beach Medical Center.
The 14-year old girl’s mother, a farmworker from Delray Beach, was enroute to make a vegetable delivery when her 2003 Ford Econoline van rear-ended a 2014 Volvo truck. Her 12-year old son and the 14-year old year girl were sitting in the back seat at the time. Her 28-year old brother, who was sitting in the front seat, suffered a leg injury.
“It’s very hard for all of us,” the grandmother added. “It’s heartbreaking. This is just too much for us.”
Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash. “Be especially careful when entering an intersection with many local business present. If you were involved in an accident due to someone else being distracted, call me for a free consultation so we can discuss your rights and what compensation you may be entitled to.”
