Many Injured In Crash After Traffic Stop Leads To Dirt Road Chase
INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A man fleeing a traffic stop crashed an SUV into a road median sending all four people in the car to a hospital with serious injuries, a deputy said in a report.
The pursuit and crash happened at dusk, according to an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office report.
Deputy Jimmy York Jr. said in the report he was in the 1900 block of 14th Street Southwest and saw the black SUV traveling without any lights at a “high rate of speed,” and tried to stop the car. York said he turned on his emergency lights and later the siren after the car failed to stop at a stop sign before turning onto 19th Ave towards 13th Street Southwest.
He stated in the report that the “driver of the vehicle … appeared to stop,” in the 1300 block of 13th Street Southwest but fled again when he started to get out of his patrol vehicle.
Driving north on the road, he said the driver lost control of the car and crashed into the road median.
“As a result of (the driver’s) actions, all occupants of the vehicle were seriously injured,” he said. One man had a possible neck injury and two women had head injuries, according to the report.
York said the driver was unable to be questioned because of the severity of her injuries.
York said a man tried to run, however after several commands to stop, he returned. York said the man told him that everyone in the car told the driver to stop before the crash.
Along with the driver, a woman, 28; a toddler, 3; and a man, 29, were taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, according to the report.
York charged the driver with felony fleeing and eluding.
Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash. “Driving the speed limit on Florida’s Highways isn’t just the law. It may save your life by keeping you from being in an accident. Unfortunately, in our practice, we have seen numerous instances where drivers blatantly violate these regulations, which results in catastrophic consequences.”
