Motorcyclist In Critical Condition After Wreck

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An unidentified man suffered critical injuries after a wreck left him trapped underneath his motorcycle, fire rescue crews said.

The crash caused all northbound lanes on U.S. 1 to be closed for about two hours, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Yanko Reyes said.

The motorcyclist, in his late 50’s, was traveling near County Road 510 and U.S. 1 when the collision with a minivan happened, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jamie Coleman said. Reyes said the man made an improper lane change into the lane the Toyota van was traveling.

When the man fell to the ground, the motorcycle also fell on top of him. Coleman said fire rescue crews lifted up the vehicle and freed the man.

“We lifted it up and pulled him out,” Coleman said. Reyes said the man was not wearing a helmet and sustained possible head injuries.

The man was flown to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Coleman said. Coleman said the man was unconscious, but breathing en route to the hospital.

Highway troopers continue to investigate the collision.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to this accident.  “It is so important to be aware of motorcyclists on the road because of the severity of their injuries in accidents. There was a public service campaign that encouraged drivers to look left, right and left again just to provide added protection to motorcyclists.
