8-Year-Old Dead After Two-Vehicle Crash On I-95 In St. Lucie County
ST LUCIE COUNTY — A 8-year-old boy died after the driver of a pickup truck rear-ended an SUV on Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
An SUV carrying the 8-year-old and four other passengers, all of Fort Pierce, was traveling in the southbound center lane of I-95 near Indrio Road, FHP investigators said in a crash report.
Investigators said the SUV slowed down while passing a vehicle on fire in a northbound lane of I-95.
The driver of the pickup, which was behind the SUV, failed to observe the SUV slowing down and crashed into its rear, according to the report.
Investigators said the SUV hit the guardrail on the median of the freeway after the pickup crashed into it, the report said.
The 8-year-old boy was transported to the hospital, but later died, according to the report.
A 35-year-old woman who also was a passenger in the SUV had serious injuries, according to the report. Two other passengers, a 3-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, had minor injuries.
The driver of the SUV, a 38-year-old man, was not injured.
The driver of the pickup, a 70-year-old man from Vero Beach, had serious injuries, according to the report.
FHP did not identify any of those involved in the crash.
