Boynton Beach Man, 81, Faces Charge In Crash That Killed Woman Riding Motorcycle

BOYNTON BEACH — Police have charged an 81-year-old man in a crash near downtown Boynton Beach that killed a northern Broward County woman.

The suspect was booked at the Palm Beach County Jail in the death of a 58-year-old woman. Jail records indicate he faces a DUI charge and that he left custody on his own recognizance a few hours later. Court records weren’t immediately available at the time of this report.

According to a Boynton Beach police update and a crash report, the wreck happened just before dusk when the suspect’s Cadillac SUV turned left off Ocean Avenue and pulled in front of the woman’s Suzuki motorcycle as she drove south on Federal Highway.

Paramedics took her to Delray Medical Center, where she died.

Neither the driver nor his passenger was injured, the report said.

Police reported that the driver smelled of alcohol and swayed and had glassy eyes and slurred speech.

The report said investigators couldn’t immediately determine the status of the traffic lights at the time of the crash. A motorist traveling in the same direction as the driver said the light was red. However, the driver insisted he had a green turn arrow.

He began a field-sobriety test, but said he could not finish because of hip and back issues. He then agreed to a blood-alcohol test that showed his level at 0.03, below the 0.08 threshold for drunken driving, the report said.

The officer calculated average drops in blood-alcohol levels and estimated that at the time of the crash, three hours before the test was taken, he likely was at the 0.08 threshold.

The officer also said he suspected he was “under the influence of some sort of chemical or controlled substance” at the time of the crash and obtained a urine sample.

Anyone who witnessed the crash should call Boynton Beach police traffic homicide investigators at 561-742-6853.
