A semi-truck driver failed to recognize traffic slowing in front of him when he crashed into three vehicles on Florida’s Turnpike, according to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report.

Investigators said, the 54-year-old driver of Tamarac, was traveling north on the Turnpike between Okeechobee and Northlake Boulevard when he “failed to use due care” prior to the collision. The 54-year-old man’s 18-wheeler first crashed into the rear of a Kia Forte, then rolled onto its side and slid forward, colliding with another Kia and another semi- truck, the report said.

A Lake Worth resident, Joseph Litton, who’s Kia Forte was rear-ended, was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center with serious injuries. Timothy Gerald 43, of Jupiter, also sustained critical injuries when the truck driver slid into his vehicle.

The 54-year-old truck driver and the other victims all had minor injuries, investigators and the Florida Highway Patrol official said.

After a few hours, one lane of traffic was allowed on the shoulder, but investigators later routed all traffic off the expressway at Okeechobee, FHP said. He said, the one critical injury upped the intensity of the agency’s investigation and might keep lanes closed.

Charges are pending the results of a completed crash investigation.
