Connecting The Sawgrass Expressway With I-95 And The Florida Turnpike
Transportation officials want to increase capacity along the route and make it easier for drivers to move between three of the county’s busiest thoroughfares, according to a press release.
An 18-point plan was presented last December. It included the widening of Southwest 10th Street and the digging of an expressway “trench” down the middle to bypass the traffic signals and lessen the congestion on the surface roads that will run on both sides of the trench.
Officials estimated it would take at least 8 years and cost about $500 million to build, and they didn’t know how they were going to pay for it.
Wednesday evening transportation officials will discuss the project development and environment study, which will address existing problems and proposed improvements for the stretch.
It will also evaluate the social, economic and environmental impacts of the project, according to a press release. The meeting will include an open house with maps, drawings and information for the public. That will be followed by a formal presentation from project representatives.
Deerfield Beach residents and commuters have been debating this connection for decades.
A connection was part of the original plans when the Sawgrass Expressway opened in 1986. Several communities supported the link but some residents of Deerfield Beach resisted because it would slice through one of the city’s biggest residential developments, Century Village, as well as several business areas.
As the population grew, efforts were renewed in 1993 and 2008 to connect the highways and allow nonstop traffic flow without disrupting local traffic.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Shuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to the change in our interchange system: “This construction will be a great addition to our road system in South Florida in the Deerfield area. It appears that it will make our roads safer and cut down on some of the traffic slow downs in the area”.
