Crash At 58th Avenue And College Lane Prompts Traffic Delays For Hours

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A crash and a downed power line on 58th Avenue prompted traffic delays and power outages at the large intersection west of Vero Beach at State Road 60.

A trailer carrying yard waste became detached from the pickup truck hauling it and struck the front of a pool company truck in the southbound lanes of 58th Avenue at College Lane, an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office deputy said.

The area, near Home Depot and Walmart, is a heavily traveled shopping district.

The downed power line, not related to the crash, started a small grass fire, Indian River County sheriff’s officials said.

Law enforcement officials are considering the crash to be a hit-and-run, and are looking for the pickup that hauled the trailer after it left the crash without stopping, the deputy said.

Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Roger Dion said there were no injuries.

While at the crash site, deputies watched a power line snap and fall just south of a Florida Power and Light substation. It was unrelated to the crash, sheriff’s officials said.

It started a small grass fire on the eastbound shoulder which was extinguished quickly.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash.  “A Hit-and-run is one of the worst type of accidents.  When that person that fled the scene is caught you have rights that are different then in a regular car crash.  Make sure you speak to a licensed professional about your rights”.
