Driver Charged For Car Crash That Killed 3 And Left One Other Critical

A driver who fatally struck two Girl Scouts and a mother along a Wellington Highway was huffing chemicals prior to the deadly crash, police said.

The 31-year-old turned himself in to police after the crash in Boca Raton that also sent another girl to the hospital, the post reports.

Police identified the  victims as 11-year’s-old and from Palm Beach, as well as a 7-year old, and her 32-year-old mother, both of Boulevard. They were picking up trash along the highway when they were struck.

Another girl who was not immediately identified remained hospitalized in stable condition, according to the newspaper.

The 31-year-old man’s truck was found abandoned in Palm Beach Gardens after an officer tracked leaking fluid nearly two miles from the crash scene. A passenger in the 31-year-old man’s truck also surrendered to police, but that suspect had not been identified, the newspaper reported.

The man was scheduled to appear in court. He’s expected to face 13 possible charges, including three counts of homicide, sheriff officials told the post.

Police and witnesses said, the man was speeding on a highway when his truck veered into a shallow ditch where the girls were picking up trash.

The man and his unidentified passenger both admitted to huffing chemicals prior to the crash, police said. He has a previous conviction for drunken driving.

The girls were students at the elementary schools in Palm Beach County where grief counselors were on hand as classes.
