The driver in a deadly crash was intoxicated when he sped through a red light at Boynton Beach Avenue and Boca Raton, according to court records.

In a search warrant filed for medical records, the Palm Beach Sheriff Office wrote that a trauma doctor at St. Mary’s Medical Center said the 38-year-old’s blood alcohol level was .15. That is nearly twice the legal limit that a driver’s blood-alcohol level can be in Florida.

The driver has not been charged at this time in the crash that left three people dead and five others, including himself, seriously injured. The Palm Beach police department say their investigation remains open, although the search warrant indicates he is being investigated on DUI manslaughter charges.

The 38-year-old could not immediately be reached for comment.

Police say the Riviera Beach resident was driving a Nissan Altima north on Boynton Beach shortly when he drove through a red light at the intersection with Boca Raton and slammed into a Toyota Camry that was turning left.

The front passenger in the Camry, 25-year-old Sarah West, was thrown from the car as it turned clockwise onto Australian, records show. She hit the front bumper of a southbound Lincoln that had stopped after seeing the wreck. The West Palm Beach resident died at St. Mary’s medical center.

The Camry driver, who the search warrant identifies as a 31-year-old was seriously injured in the wreck. Doctors told police last month that he likely wouldn’t survive his injuries. However, he remained hospitalized in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said.

Two passengers in the Altima’s both died at the scene.
