Driver Of Van In Vero Beach Crash That Killed Holy Cross Rower Cited For Death

VERO BEACH, Fla. — A former rowing team coach, the driver of the van involved in the crash that killed a 20-year-old rower from College of the Holy Cross, was cited for the deadly crash.

An accident report from Vero Beach police states the rowing team coach violated a pickup truck’s right of way while trying to make a left-hand turn on Indian River Boulevard to go east over the Barber Bridge.

The light was green without a green turn arrow, according to the report. The van drove directly into the path of an oncoming pickup truck which slammed into the van.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the 20-year-old who was sitting in the front passenger seat trapped inside the van due to damage from the crash, according to the report. She was unresponsive but still breathing.

There were also several others in the back of the van who were injured and asking for help, according to the report. When an officer approached the team coach he said, “I thought I had a green arrow” and “Did I not have a green arrow? Did I have… we don’t know if I had?” according to a report.

The driver of the pickup truck said the van pulled out in front of him and he didn’t have time to react.

The 20-year-old later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Police determined the violation of the truck’s right of way was the cause of the crash.

The team coach recently resigned from his position as director of rowing and head coach of the women’s rowing team. He worked at Holy Cross for 34 years.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash.  “Cases involving accidents with trucks are always subject to heightened scrutiny because of the additional regulations placed on drivers of those vehicles. Unfortunately, in our practice, we have seen numerous instances where drivers blatantly violate these regulations, which results in catastrophic consequences.”
