Driver sought in fatal hit-and-run crash in North Lauderdale

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 66-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash and the driver is still at large, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash happened on South State Road 7 near Aztec Boulevard.

When deputies arrived after receiving a 911 call, they found a woman lying in the road, according to the sheriff’s office. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle heading north hit her as she crossed State Road 7 after getting off a Broward County bus, the sheriff’s office said. The vehicle then fled the scene.

She was on the ground when another vehicle hit her, according to the sheriff’s office. The driver of this second vehicle got out of the car, tried to render aid and cooperated with investigators.

Traffic homicide investigators noted the woman was not crossing the street in a designated crosswalk when she was hit by the first vehicle.

Detectives believe the vehicle that fled the scene is a pearl white 2018 Kia Optima LX, the sheriff’s office said. During the crash, the vehicle’s passenger side view mirror came off the car.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call BSO Traffic Homicide Department.

Anonymous tips that lead to an arrest are eligible for a reward of up to $3,000.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash.  “A Hit-and-run is one of the worst type of accidents.  When that person that fled the scene is caught you have rights that are different then in a regular car crash.  Make sure you speak to a licensed professional about your rights”.
