Five Dead, Three In Critical Condition Following Car Crash In Martin County

A car driven by a young man ran a stop sign and smashed into another vehicle in Martin County, killing five people including a woman who was returning from a banquet as the County’s probation agent of the year, authorities said.

“This should have never happened. People should be paying attention to their speed, to the traffic signals,” a Martin County Police Lieutenant said.

The crash happened in Martin County Township about 35 miles (55 kilometres) northwest of Stuart.

Investigators said a car, driven by a 22-year old man, failed to stop at a sign and struck a vehicle traveling east on Martin County Highway. Another 59-year old man described it as a “T-bone” crash in a rural area.

Two people died in one car and three in the other. Three more people were also in critical condition, including the 22-year old driver and the 39-year old driver of the other vehicle.

One of the people confirmed dead included a 35-year old woman who was returning home from a Martin County Corrections Department banquet where she was celebrated as parole/probation agent of the year. Her 69-year old mother was also severely injured.

“Everyone here is in disbelief and shock. She was beloved by everybody,” a Corrections Department spokesman said of the 39-year old woman who had lost her life. “Yesterday was such a high and a celebration of the work she did.”

Speed limits approaching the intersection are 55 mph (88 kph), a Martin County Sergeant said.

The accident is still under investigation.

Accident attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to this unfortunate crash. “This is a serious accident involving two vehicles, which ultimately, resulted in the death of two people and caused serious injuries to five others.
