Fredric Bonner, 55, was riding bicycles with his daughter and girlfriend to the beach when they noticed something was missing from his open book bag, police and medical examiner reports said.

Bonner saw something laying in the eastbound lanes of the drawbridge on the boulevard, just west of the barrier island. Bonner left his bike on the south side of the bridge, walked into the traffic lanes to get the item and as he was returning to his bicycle when he was struck by a Volkswagen Jetta GLI that was traveling east toward the beach.

The driver of the sedan, a 26-year-old of Davie, stopped after the collision. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue paramedics found Bonner had died at the scene. The 26-year-old was traveling an estimated 30 mph in a 35 mph zone, a crash report said. He was not distracted and alcohol and drug use were not suspected, it said.

Police did not issue a citation and no charges were filed against the 26-year-old in the investigation that is continuing, a Fort Lauderdale Detective said.
