John Stermer And His Dogs Were Killed Struck And Killed By A Drunk Driver
A 47-year old man of Wellington, faces charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, DUI causing serious bodily injury and reckless driving in the death of John J. Stermer.
Reports said the 47-year old driver of a 2014 Ford Mustang, sped south on Big Blue Trace and failed to reduce his speed or take evasive action to avoid a collision with the 2015 Jeep Wrangler driven by a 48-year old man.
The Mustang rear-ended the Wrangler, causing both cars to go off the road. The Wrangler went onto the sidewalk and hit Stermer and his dogs. Stermer and dogs, Gracie and Bella, were thrown in the air and died at the scene, according to sheriff’s records and Stermer’s obituary.
He was traveling more than 100 mph in a 40 mph zone. The driver was so drunk he didn’t realize he’d broken his wrist and a bone was protruding, reports show.
The 47-year old was booked at the Palm Beach County Jail. The Palm Beach County Circuit Judge ordered the 47-year old held until a hearing on whether he should be held in pre-trial detention.
The 48-year old driver of the Jeep was seriously injured in the wreck, the sheriff’s office said. The driver of the Mustang sustained minor injuries.
