Man Charged In Lake Worth Beach Hit-And-Run

LAKE WORTH BEACH — A 28-year-old man struck and critically injured a pedestrian in Lake Worth Beach, then drove off, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said in arresting him.

The crash at Lake Avenue and South E Street left a 65-year-old man with critical injuries.

The driver is charged with leaving the scene of a crash with a serious injury after a 65-year-old man was struck, according to a PBSO report.

The driver is expected to appear at a bail hearing.

The pedestrian was walking on Lake Avenue at South E Street, about a one-half mile northwest of his home, when he was sideswiped and knocked down. He was not in the crosswalk, the report said.

He was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

PBSO put out an alert for either a late model Dodge or Chevrolet pickup with a white cab and a black tool bed with a ladder rack attachment, and with possible damage to its passenger side.

The report said a deputy spotted a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup behind a home on the 300 block of South E Street, about three blocks from where the victim was struck.

A few hours later, an investigator met with the owner, who said he’d loaned it to the driver, a neighbor. The investigator then went to the driver who confessed and was arrested, the report said.

In May 2019, court records show he pleaded guilty to speeding. Adjudication was withheld and he paid $454 in fines and court costs.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash.  “A Hit-and-run is one of the worst type of accidents.  When that person that fled the scene is caught you have rights that are different then in a regular car crash.  Make sure you speak to a licensed professional about your rights”.
