Man Hospitalized After Being Hit By Car In Downtown Vero Beach

VERO BEACH — A man remains in the hospital with multiple broken bones after he was hit by a car and left bleeding on a busy downtown thoroughfare, police said.

Vero Beach Police Department is searching for a dark, four-door sedan seen on surveillance footage striking a pedestrian described as a white man in his 50s as he crossed U.S. 1 around dusk.

Officer John Scroggin said he’s working to identify the vehicle and its driver from the video.

He said the man was hit by the eastbound car while crossing the highway in front of nearby Pizza Mia and Rosie’s Pub.

“He walked out into the street prior to the accident,” said Scroggin. “When the car actually hits him, it is the first it hits its breaks, and it looks like it moves over a lane.”

The impact sent the man up onto the left side of the car, he said.

Scroggin said the video shows the car pull into an alley behind one of the nearby businesses, but he couldn’t tell if it went south on 11th Avenue or pulled back onto U.S. 1.

“It doesn’t appear that they stopped or came back,” he said.

Scroggin said the man was a resident of the area and was bleeding from the head, but was conscious when rescue workers arrived and took him to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.

The posted speed limit sign nearby states 35 mph on that stretch of road.

Scroggin said from the video it was hard to determine the sedan’s speed.

“It definitely looks like he was at least maintaining the speed limit for the general area,” he said.

Passersby called police, he said.

The department asks for anyone who was near the crash Sunday evening to call Scroggin at 772-978-4980.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash.  “Driving the speed limit on Florida’s Highways isn’t just the law.  It may save your life by keeping you from being in an accident.  Unfortunately, in our practice, we have seen numerous instances where drivers blatantly violate these regulations, which results in catastrophic consequences.”
