Man Suffers Extensive Burn Injuries in Fiery Five-Vehicle Crash Near Palm Beach Gardens
A 53-year-old Palm Beach man was seriously injured after a five-vehicle accident along Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP spokesman Alvara Feola revealed that the victim suffered from third degree burns. Therefore, he was immediately airlifted to the hospital. The victim was not in the vehicle that caught fire.
A tire blowout on one of the vehicles caused the chain reaction crash. FHP stated that a 45-year-old Fort Pierce resident, drove his Volvo tractor-trailer northbound on Interstate-95 in the early hours of the morning. He was in the center lane when his left front tire had a blowout; he then tried to pull onto the left shoulder, an FHP report indicates.
The driver of a Chevy Impala, a 26-year-old woman, was in the left lane when she tried to swerve to avoid the Volvo but crashed into the back of the trailer. As a result, the Impala twisted to face southbound.
Subsequently, another woman who was driving a Pontiac Vibe was in the center lane when she collided with the back of the Volvo. The Pontiac remained in the center lane after impact. It was then hit by a Volkswagen Jetta, the report confirms.
The impact caused the Pontiac to rollover and face west in the center and right lanes. A fifth vehicle – an Audi – also struck the back of the Volvo trailer. It spun clockwise and went into the median, where it caught fire.
According to Feola, the driver of the Audi, a 34-year-old man of Palm Beach Gardens, got out of the vehicle before the flames spread. No other injuries were reported from the crash. FHP announced that the accident caused northbound lanes on I-95 to be closed for several hours.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash; it remains under investigation by the FHP.
