Passenger Burns To Death After Crash, Woman Charged With DUI Manslaughter

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.— A woman who told rescuers she had no one else in her car when it slammed into a utility pole and caught fire is now under arrest.

Deerfield Beach Police have arrested the woman, 34, on DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges.

The crash happened on Northeast Third Avenue in Deerfield Beach.

According to reports, the driver, a single mother of two, crossed into oncoming traffic, hopped a curb, and crashed into the concrete pole. She had a blood alcohol level of .015, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 in Florida. At the time of the wreck, Good Samaritans helped her from the burning wreckage, and she told them no one else was in the car.

After rescue crews put out the fire, they found the body of a man, 33, of Pompano Beach. According to the crash report, he died in the fire.

Investigators said she was going 62 miles-per-hour in a 30 mph zone. At the hospital, she told doctors she had multiple vodka drinks.

She is also facing a charge of reckless driving.

Comments:

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash.  “Driving the speed limit on Florida’s Highways isn’t just the law.  It may save your life by keeping you from being in an accident.  Unfortunately, in our practice, we have seen numerous instances where drivers blatantly violate these regulations, which results in catastrophic consequences.”
