PBSO: Three People Injured After Man With History Of Car Thefts Crashed Stolen SUV
A Greenacres man with a history of auto-theft arrests was charged after he fled from a crash scene involving an SUV stolen from a car-rental company, authorities said.
The 29-year-old is charged with grand theft auto and possession of a weapon by a felon.
A judge set his bail at $100,000 at the Palm Beach County Jail. Attempts to reach him or his relatives were unsuccessful.
According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office report, the 29-year old, after stealing the SUV, was speeding and crashed into a 2019 Ford Expedition while it was making a u-turn.
Three people in the Expedition were taken to local hospitals.
People saw a man get out of the SUV and run down Gun Club Road, the report said. The witnesses told deputies the man was dressed in black, wore a bulletproof vest and had a handgun in a thigh holster.
The report said deputies found the 29-year old at an auto parts store on South Military Trail, about a mile south of Gun Club. They also found a holster and a gun.
Avis alerted authorities that the SUV, worth $55,000, had been stolen from a car-rental site near the West Palm Beach Brightline station, the report said.
The 29-year old told investigators an “unknown individual” gave him the car. He could not provide a name or contact information. He admitted to crashing it and throwing away his gun when he saw the deputies approach.
Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash. “A Hit-and-run is one of the worst type of accidents. When that person that fled the scene is caught you have rights that are different then in a regular car crash. Make sure you speak to a licensed professional about your rights”.
