Port St. Lucie police have a person in custody in connection with a car crash that had killed one of its officers.
The individual is currently being questioned, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman said in an email.
The person in custody has not been charged, officials told the post.
Port St. Lucie police have not yet publicly identified the officer killed in the crash. The identity of the officer, as well as the suspect, will be released a press conference, police authorities said.
Additional details about the crash will also be given at the news conference, a FHP spokesman said. No further information about the crash would be given.
The fatal crash happened as the officer assisted on a traffic stop in the eastbound lane of River Park near St. Lucie Village.
The officer was taken to Fort Pierce Medical Center where he was later confirmed dead.
Police authorities and the Florida Highway Patrol say the vehicle that struck the officer was a dark, late-model Jeep Wrangler, with damage to its right front.
According to a police spokesman, anyone with vital information relating to the crash should contact the relevant authorities.
Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to distracted driving. “In my many years as a Personal Injury Lawyer I’ve helped many victims that were injured because someone was distracted and crashed into their vehicles.
