Police: Man Hit By Vehicle While Crossing Southwest Port St. Lucie Boulevard In Critical Condition

PORT ST. LUCIE — A 66-year-old man was hit by a sport utility vehicle on Southwest Port St. Lucie Boulevard, police said.

The Port St. Lucie resident was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, and was last known to be in critical condition, according to Port St. Lucie police.

A 2017 Chevrolet SUV traveling south on Southwest Port St. Lucie Boulevard hit the pedestrian in an eastbound turn lane near Southwest Tunis Avenue around dawn, police officials said on social media.

The man was thrown to the ground, but the SUV did not pass over him, according to police spokesperson Sgt. Keith Boham.

He said the driver stayed at the crash site, and is cooperating with police.

The area is near a Publix and a shopping center.

The man was either standing or attempting to cross the road in the turn lane when he was hit, according to police.

Just after one hour, all lanes of the boulevard between Southwest Tunis Avenue and Southwest Darwin Boulevard were closed while detectives looked over the scene of the crash, according to officials on social media.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the road reopened.

Officials said investigators do not believe the driver was at fault in the crash.
