Common Reasons for Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcycle accidents can occur due to a number of unfortunate factors. Like other accidents, motorcycle accidents can happen because of driver error (such as distracted driving). The other common reasons for these types of accidents include the following:
- Drunk Driving: Inebriated driving is a dangerous and unlawful act that can pose a catastrophic danger to others on the road. Those who drive while drunk should be punished for the poor judgment they made before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.
- Damage in Road: Road damage such as an unpaved or improperly paved road, potholes, cracks in the cement, or a sinkhole pose great risks to drivers. Especially when driving a motorcycle, it can be difficult to avoid these types of road hazards, and this is why they are common causes of motorcycle crashes.
- Speeding: Driving above the posted speed limit can cause a motorcycle to easily go out of control. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to function at their best and can lead to collisions.
- Auto Defect: Auto defects such as those affecting the steering system, airbags, or engine are commonly found to be responsible for many motorcycle accidents.
You should not be held responsible for the financial burdens following an accident caused by a negligent party. At Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller & Overbeck P.A., our motorcycle accident lawyers want to help you find the compensation and peace of mind you need after an accident.
Motorcycle Accident Facts and Statistics
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that helmets were responsible for saving around 1,772 motorcyclists in 2015. If all motorcycle drivers had worn helmets that year, 740 more people would have been saved. Helmets reduce the risk of death by 37% and the risk of head injury by 69%. Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported that there were 10,331 motorcycle crashes in 2016. Of those crashes, there were 515 deaths and 8,256 injuries.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that in Florida in 2016, there were 586 motorcycle fatalities. Of those fatalities, 288 drivers were helmeted and 283 were un-helmeted. In 2016, motorcyclists accounted for 18% of deaths in Florida. Of the reported fatalities, 189 victims were between the ages of 20-29, 99 victims were between the ages of 30-39, and 96 victims were aged 59 or older. The NHTSA also reported that across the United States in 2013, there were an estimated 88,000 injured motorcyclists. Motorcyclist fatalities occurred 26 times more often than fatalities from car crashes. Of those who were involved in fatal crashes, 25% of motorcyclists did not have a valid motorcycle license. Alcohol impairment was found to be a cause in 40% of those who died on a motorcycle in 2013. The NHTSA estimated that 1,630 lives were saved from wearing helmets in 2013.
More likely than not, you will be involved in some sort of vehicular accident at least once in your life. Perhaps, in your case, this accident involved yourself and your motorcycle. You may be able to make claims to compensate for the losses you experience from the negligence of another driver colliding with you. Every day in the United States there are motorcycle accidents that are not the riders fault, but the fault of a passenger vehicle or even another rider who is being careless on the road. If you were in an accident, it is never too late to seek medical treatment, and you should do so immediately and contact our law firm to begin discussing your options for the case. On the other hand, if you are looking for information for a friend or loved one who was in a motorcycle accident on their behalf, we would be more than happy to discuss options for them and help you get the information needed. Now, not all accidents are the same as there can be multiple factors that could have led to the collision with a passenger vehicle or another rider. There are many reasons why a motorcycle crash can happen, just as accidents with cars and trucks. Additionally, some accidents are more common due to certain circumstances. Some cases, a car may turn into you and cause a crash. Other instances a car may be switching lanes and not notice you in their blind spot. While other factors may be hitting the gravel on a turn, hazardous conditions, or a fellow motorcyclist who was being careless putting you in danger.
Contrary to what many might believe, a majority of accidents involve riders who are not professionally trained and are self-taught or taught by friends and family. A majority of these riders are also male, where females are over-represented in data. Furthermore, the weather is not a factor in many motorcycle accidents, but rather passenger vehicles and single-vehicle collisions. To some people’s surprise, there is less than a 2-second window for a motorcyclist to be able to avoid a collision event. Wearing a motorcycle helmet has shown no real distraction or lack of view, or really anything that would put the rider at a disadvantage and increase accident chances. In fact, approximately half of riders in traffic at one point wore helmets when riding. Of those who were involved in collisions, more than half were not wearing their helmets which greatly increases fatality rates. Additionally, people who were surveyed on why they chose not to wear a helmet a majority did not expect to be in a collision while the rest felt it was discomforting and the helmet felt restricting.
Driving while under the influence of alcohol is one of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents. It is likely that another rider may have been under the influence when and if they collided with you. If so, take this time to contact us and we will be able to go through your options with you to build a solid case that will have the greatest chance of delivering fair compensation to you.
