Previous recalls failed to address fire risks in GM vehicles

An October 27 report from ABC News revealed that General Motors (GM) is planning to recall 1.4 million vehicles in the U.S. due to fire risks that previous recall fixes failed to correct.

Reports said GM issued recalls in 2008 and 2009 of several of their vehicles due to an oil leak from the valve cover gasket. The affected vehicles may catch fire if the leaking oil reaches the hot surfaces of the engine’s exhaust.

A GM investigation revealed that 1,345 of the previously repaired vehicles caught fire after the corrections were made. There have been nineteen minor injuries related to this issue; however, GM has stated that the defect has not led to any deaths or collisions since the last recall. GM will notify owners of recalled vehicles after they have come up with a final solution to the problem.
