Sebastian Woman Killed In Rollover Crash; 3 Others Hurt
INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 21-year-old Sebastian woman was killed and three others were hurt in a wreck that blocked westbound State Road 60, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.
The woman, who was a passenger in a sports utility vehicle, was taken to a trauma center where doctors pronounced her dead, officials said. The SUV’s driver, a 48-year-old man, along with two other passengers – two women ages 55 and 18 – had non-life threatening injuries, troopers said.
The driver and other two passengers are from Sebastian, troopers said. FHP is no longer releasing the names of crash victims because of privacy reasons.
The wreck happened in the 21000 block of State Road 60, southeast of Blue Cypress Road. Troopers said the SUV driver was headed westbound when he drove onto the northern grass shoulder.
The driver then swerved to the left and lost control of the vehicle, troopers said. The SUV traveled across the westbound lanes and onto the southern grass shoulder.
Troopers said the driver then swerved to the right. The vehicle traveled in a northwestern direction before it overturned, authorities said.
Sheriff’s officials said the two rear passengers were thrown from the vehicle. A third passenger sitting in the front had a severe head injury, officials said.
The four people in the SUV were flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said. Troopers said the woman who died from her injuries and another passenger were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Authorities closed westbound S.R. 60 from mile marker 7 to Blue Cypress Road, Kofke said. It was unclear what time the road was expected to reopen.
FHP will investigate the cause of the wreck.
