Six Injured As Two Cars Collide In St. Lucie County

Six people were injured, including a bicyclist and three pedestrians, when two cars collided in what police are investigating as a road rage incident in St. Lucie County, authorities said.

A Ford Explorer and a Lincoln Town Car were at the intersection of Westbound and Eastbound Street when the sedan tried to go around the SUV and struck it. The impact caused the SUV to hit a bicyclist and then sped off, hitting at least one other person, police said.

“Right now, we are investigating this as a road rage incident,” said a FHP Deputy Inspector of the 1st Precinct. The 62-year-old driver was detained by police, but it wasn’t immediately clear what charges he was facing.

“It doesn’t appear to be intentional right now,” the inspector said.

A 40-year old man from Astoria said he had just left work at 120 Eastbound Avenue and was stopped at the intersection about to cross when he saw the mayhem.

“I just heard the car speeding up and I heard people screaming,” he said. “I was standing just ready to cross the street. It just seemed like it was aiming for people. There was a whole bunch of people just running scattered. He wasn’t stopping at all.” He said he saw one woman dive out of the way of the speeding car.

“Had she not dove out of the way, she would have probably been killed,” he said. “The car ended up hitting her left leg,” he said. A police spokesman said cops have surveillance video of the incident.

The drivers of the Mercedes and the SUV were both injured. The victims were taken to Delray Medical Center. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
