Taxi Crashes Into Car Then Hits Construction Worker In St. Lucie County

A construction worker was seriously injured when a driver hit him in a chain-reaction crash in St. Lucie County Patrol officials said.

A yellow taxi hit the front driver’s side of a red Toyota Camry in Fort Pierce near East 85th Street causing the Camry drive onto the sidewalk and smash into a 37-year-old construction worker at St. Lucie County Christian Church, Federal Highway Patrol said.

The collision caused the taxi to spin 180 degrees, according to FHP officials.

A 26-year old porter at a building across the street said he darted over to the stricken worker.

“The worker tried to lift his right leg,” the Porter said. “I saw the bones sticking out at the back of his leg. The FHP firefighter said, ‘Put your leg down. The bone is popping out.’ He put his leg down, but he was still groaning.”

The driver of the Camry was scared out of her mind, the porter added. “She was shouting, ‘Thank God, we are alive. Oh my God! Thank God!’

All of the injuries were non-life-threatening, officials said. Three people were transported to Delray Medical Center, a Federal Highway Patrol spokesman said.
