Teen Driver Dies After Horrifying Car Crash In St. Lucie County

An 18-year-old was driving a Volkswagen Passat east in St. Lucie County when he was T-boned by a Toyota Sienna minivan that ran a stop sign at the intersection, according to the authorities.

An 18-year-old driver was hit by Toyota Sienna. The teen’s car then crashed into two parked cars at 80th Street in Westbound Hill.

Residents who live nearby heard the thunderous collision and came running outside to see if they could help the young man who was trapped inside the car.

“I heard a loud crash and I came out,” said, a 47-year old man, who lives near the accident scene. “A bunch of cars were twisted up together with a young man trapped in the middle.

“All of us ran over to help him but we could not get him out,” said another local resident, who decided not to identify himself.

“My neighbors were screaming, ‘Stay awake, stay awake,’ ” the man recalled. “The car was really twisted and he was sandwiched in there.

“A bunch of us surrounded the Volkswagen and we tried to pull the doors open,” he said.

“It took firefighters a while to get him out. He was wedged in there.”

The teen driver died at the hospital.

The 21-year-old van driver refused medical attention at the scene, officials said.

The silver four-door sedan was completely crushed on the side.

No charges have been filed yet, but police are still investigating. They said speed may have been a factor.
