Fourteen people were in the 15-seat-capacity van when it crashed, according to the Highway Patrol. The van had gone down an embankment and landed in the shallow water of the canal, which is lined with tall grass and weeds.

The crash critically injured the male driver and two other passengers, one male, and one female, FHP said. Their names were not released pending notification of their families.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 2 other passengers taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Among them was a 3-year-old child who was not in a car seat and is said to be in serious condition.
