Twenty People Confirmed Dead After Wellington Car Tragedy

A crash was reported in the northbound lanes of Wellington 62nd Street and initially involving one motorcyclist, FHP officials said.


After the crash, several people stopped at the scene to help the motorcycle rider and were using their vehicles to protect the rider from being struck, according to Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue Captain. Shortly after, a Honda Accord crashed into the people and vehicles at the scene, leading to a mass casualty incident and 27 people hurt.

The Honda driver stayed at the scene and was speaking to investigators. The vehicle was later towed away. Nine people died where the crash happened and eleven others died at Delray Medical Center, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A Florida Highway Patrol announced the arrest of a 32-year-old man, who was taken into custody on suspicion of committing eight counts of DUI manslaughter, two counts of DUI with serious bodily injury, three counts of DUI with property damage and one count of resisting arrest with violence.

The driver was being held at a Correctional Center in Wellington.

The identities of the twenty people that had lost their lives in the crash are still being withheld according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
