Two Dead In Fiery Turnpike Crash West Of Delray Beach

DELRAY BEACH — Two people died in a fiery two-vehicle crash on Florida’s Turnpike west of Delray Beach, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Authorities say a male and a female passenger were killed when their sedan crashed into the rear of a truck that had broken down on the highway. Information regarding their ages and cities of residence was not immediately available.

Both vehicles caught fire after the impact, FHP said.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes just north of the Atlantic Avenue exit and brought traffic to a halt for hours. All southbound lanes remained closed more than four hours after the wreck, the Florida Department of Transportation reported on its Twitter account.

FHP said the cause of the crash is under investigation. According to its report, the disabled truck was in the left southbound lane when the sedan struck it. The report does not indicate the speed at which the sedan was traveling at the time of impact.

Authorities declared both the male and the female dead at the scene. The driver of truck, a 64-year-old Port St. Lucie man, had serious injuries, FHP said.

FHP did not identify the victims. It stopped releasing the names of crash victims last springs saying it did so to comply with a 2018 amendment to the state constitution giving crime victims and their families the right to withhold their names from public reports.

This wreck is the second deadly crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Palm Beach County five days.

Two Port St. Lucie men died last week following a wreck on the highway near Palm Beach Gardens. Authorities said they were traveling south near PGA Boulevard when their truck struck the fallen load of a tractor trailer that was involved in a northbound crash.

The unidentified men died at the scene. Two other passengers in their vehicle sustained serious injuries, FHP said.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to distracted driving.  “In my many years as a Personal Injury Lawyer I’ve helped many victims that were injured because someone was distracted and crashed into their vehicles.  If you’ve been injured by someone because they weren’t paying attention to the road, please call me so I can help you get compensation for your damages.”
